Brief History

1907 (Meiji 40) The Tohoku Imperial University was founded.
1911 (Meiji 44) The Mathematical Institute was established within the Tohoku Imperial University.
1947 (Showa 22) The Tohoku Imperial University became Tohoku University.
1964 (Showa 39) - 1967 (Showa 42) The prior five laboratories were reorganized to laboratories devoted to the study of complex analysis, algebra, geometry, functional analysis, and real analysis. Later, three more laboratories were added to support study of mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, and theory of differential equations.
1983 (Showa 58) The laboratory for manifold theory was added.
1995 (Heisei 7) Because of university reforms to emphasize graduate study, the Mathematical Institute was reorganized to five major laboratories of algebra, geometry, analysis, manifold theory, and applied mathematics. At the same time, the Mathematical Institute was renamed as the Faculty of Science to the Graduate School of Science.
