Message from Chair of Mathematical Institute ■First of all, we express our deep gratitude for the encouragements and for offering the support. So far we have confirmed the safety of all the faculty members and all the students but two students from abroad. We are currently looking into the damage suffered by the buildings and other infrastructures. The book storage space has been severely affected. In general we estimate a high cost for putting the library back to a working condition. On the personnel front, the new faculty members who are to be appointed this April to our department will not be able to move to Sendai for a while, and all the students are instructed to stay with their parents or other places of safety till the end of April. Our inability to secure a proper working and living environment for them remains a grave concern. In the meantime, we are very grateful for numerous offers by other mathematics departments to accommodate our students to use their library and other facilities. When graduate students affected by the disaster, of our depertment as well as of other departments of the area, come to your university for help, we humbly ask for your kind considerations for their well-being within your capacity. Sincerely, Motoko Kotani Department Chair Tel: 022-795-6404 Fax: 022-795-6400 e-mail: senkocho@math.tohoku.ac.jp ■My deepest condolences go out to those who were affected by the Tohoku Pacific Ocean Offshore Earthquake of Friday March 11, 2011.
